This new spaceship was similar to the Mercury capsule (first human spaceflight in the United States) but the Gemini ship was significantly larger. Project Gemini took place between the Mercury and Apollo missions. In the Gemini spaceship, the astronauts were given very little space. It was designed to carry two astronauts in to orbit and to test the skills needed to reach the moon. The capsule consisted of 5 major components such as the rendezvous and recovery section, cabin, section, equipment section, etc. The Gemini capsule flew on a Titan II rocket which was a redesigned missile. Launches took place at Cape Canaveral in Florida. There were a total of 2 unmanned and 10 manned crews that were launched during the years 1965-1966. The name Gemini came from the constellation which means "twins."
